FARMA 20 YEARS!

Time flies when having fun and what a fun time it has been. This autumn it is 20 years since the first FARMA left the factory and started its journey to become the number 1 lumber trailer brand in Europe. We thought it would be nice to read the story of the man behind the brand and how the first FARMA was created right there on the factory floor.

History about how it all started

Leif Fors, founder of Fors Mekaniska Werkstad (Fors MW) is a true entrepreneur. As so often with entrepreneurs it is not the goal in itself which is the attraction, but rather the journey there. The company has been run within a variety of industries. Basically a builder with vast experience of the building industry, but a dog handler on large estates in the hunting season and a quarrying plant in Portugal have also belonged to the activities, to name but a few.

At the end of the 1980s, Leif could never have imagined that a machine business would be the start of a journey leading to the creation of one of Europe's largest production plants for forestry and agricultural machinery, in Estonia. Leif recounts, “towards the end of the 80s I took a ferry with the destination of Estonia. The main reason for the journey was curiosity, but also a large general interest however the misery I experienced just 400 kilometres from the Swedish coast line affected me deeply.

I couldn’t just close my eyes and travel home. I was, as the entrepreneur I am, forced to act. I chose to stay and have never really truly returned since. I saw misery, but also possibilities. The possibility for myself to create a future, but also a possibility to become involved and create a future for others.” Fors MW was established in 1992 and is today the oldest Swedish company in Estonia.

Leif continues, “the company started by manufacturing everything from circular saws to candlesticks and business was so-so.  My interest in forestry lead to the thought of manufacturing a lumber trailer.” All said and done and the first FARMA trailer was drawn up on the factory floor. Initially the quality was nothing to shout about but the price was pioneering. For the first time there was a trailer available for the small forest owner and the sales success was underway. Then FARMA had a single model, today nearly twenty years later there are 8 basic models that can be varied virtually endlessly. Today FARMA is one of Europe’s most sold lumber trailers. This is not principally due to a unique feature, but the fact that we have been adept in keeping down the price to the end user and over the years we have offered high quality to a low price.

Leif says, "I have always liked the forest and with the forest comes an interest in the earth. It was therefore exciting for some fifteen years ago to start the creation of one’s own forest and farm in Estonia. Today the farm consists of 3350 acres in one parcel of which 2220 acres are forest. The choice of lumber trailer was clear-cut, and over the years Fors MW products have been intensively tested on the farm. There were many times when I came to the factory on a Monday morning after a hard weekend's work on the farm and indignantly involved everyone in something like an incorrect cylinder placement, but we learned a great deal on the way. We learnt the practical use of our products.”

Today Fors MW is a prosperous company with hundreds of employees with subsidiaries in Sweden and China with three market leading brands FARMA, BIGAB and NIAB. Fors MW has experienced everything from the Estonian bank collapse in 1997 which nearly made us bankrupt to that February night in 2006 when the fire alarm connected to the mobile started to ring at five in morning. “I drove at lightning speed to the factory only to see my life’s work on fire.” The day after the fire it was apparent that the damage to the factory was extensive.

Some years later we can see our momentum slowed in that year. Focus that should have been on product development was directed to reconstruction. This is one of the reasons why I am proud of the new products that are currently on the way and which several are presented in this brochure. However, this is only a small selection of what is to come and as a forest farmer I can promise you something special.

Our history has made us respectful of the future. We know that everything can happen; we know you are never better than your last development or you last customer contact. We are a company that believes in openness in preference to closed doors. Follow our continued journey through our blog www.forsmw.blogspot.com.

BOARD MEETING AS FORS MW

Yesterday it was time for the third meeting of the Board AS FORS MW. During the hours of meeting, we went in depth in a few selected issues. Good discussion and a lot of interest from the board. We started the day with corporate and product presentation on the occasion of that Fors MW yesterday elected a new member from Swedfund into the Board, Mr Henrik Dagel, while we thanked Mr Hans Midéus for his time spent in the same.

Swedfund has been an owner of Fors MW since the end of 90 ties but were already before then involved in various ways with the company. Hans Midéus has been a part of the company since then. His experience and interest in the company has been extraordinary. Today, 15 years later, we are still part of Swedfund portfolio. A stable and reliable owner. We thank Hans Midéus for his fine effort over the years and wishes him all the best with the upcoming challenges! While we at the same time welcome Henrik Dagel and hope for an equally good cooperation in the future!

Visits to Oswald, successful German dealer!

A week ago some of us were out on a tour of Austria and southern Germany. Partly to meet potential dealers but also to visit several of the dealers that each week proves to deliver on the German market. Peter Oswald and his team in Regen has been FARMA dealer for almost ten years. Together we have colored southern Germany FARMA green. The visit began with visiting their stand at Karphamer Volkfest where we could see several FARMA trailers to customer’s satisfaction. The following day we took the opportunity also to visit their fine facilities in Regen, where we found many FARMA trailers beautiful and strategically located along one of the exit points of the city. Unfortunately we missed a golden photo opportunity but a beautiful sight it was!

We thank Peter Oswald, his family and team for some really nice days!

A BIGAB on the road

I just received this nice photo of a BIGAB 10 – 14 driving around my old neighborhood of Växjö in Småland, Sweden from Björn Vigren who works at our advertising agency. Växjö is a town where you see BIGAB all over many thanks to our fantastic dealer at place, Sundahls Maskinaffär.

FAST FARMA

As you will have seen before, every year here in the UK, we have one of the Fors MW brands on a sponsorship deal with a speedway rider. This year was 18 year old Aussie rookie Ryan Douglas from Brisbane.

During the spring he set of for the UK with a bag of clothes and not a lot else to take up his dream of racing Speedway a big step for any 18 year old.  As the season has gone on, Ryan, on his Farma logo bike has become “Flyin Ryan”, and is now one of the brightest prospects in the world of Speedway. His progress has been rapid and his determination un-questioned.

Shortly he will be returning to Brisbane, along with his bikes to race in the Aussie season, before returning, along with a Fors logo, to the UK next spring. We wish Ryan all the best!

SALTEX Fair UK – Trailers and planes

Saltex 13 was a busy affair for Fors MW attending the show for the first time. Early results look good especially for the smaller trailers and cranes as well as the smaller BIGAB models. As ever with Fors it is pleasing to meet old customers who have bought our machines over the years. The show at Windsor took place directly under the flight path of Heathrow airport in a beautiful setting next to the banks of river Thames. We could not tell which we saw most of, planes or customers, there was a plane leaving or coming every 90 seconds, so one can surely say that we were busy.

In the pictures you see our fantastic dealer Malcolm from C.F.S who did, as ever a fine job. In the other picture you see yet another Jumbo Jet over the grandstand descending.

Tomas Borg - New Sales Representative at place!

So finally we have Tomas Borg our new sales representative for Southern Sweden and Denmark at place as a part of the Fors MW team. Tomas joins us from company Nordfarm where he was responsible for forestry trailers and dumper trailers on the Norwegian market.

First work week is spent in Estonia at the factory where everything from markets to the products is reviewed. There are long days with a lot of information and lively discussions. Tomas goes straight into action by next week taking part of our stand at the Construction Expo in Sweden. Then, Tomas will devote the autumn to travel around and get familiar with all the dealers in the region. Next week a more detailed introduction of Tomas will be up on the news and at the blog.

A forest trailer from the 50 ties!

During our tour of Austria and Germany we had the opportunity to take a closer look at several forest trailers of all different brands from colleagues around Europe. However the trailer that really caught the attention of our Chief designer Christer Persson was this forest trailer probably made in the 50 ties. It was still in really good shape but one could easily see that there has been some progress in development since then. Christer has worked with designing forest trailers and cranes most of his life and was of course impressed and happy to find this trailer. It made the trip worthwhile he said.
